Event Description
This exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation and on view in two parts, includes nearly 80 engravings, woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and aquatints examining the perpetual theme of war and peace. The exhibit features works of art by some of the most virtuoso printmakers in history, including Albrecht Dürer, Hendrick Goltzius and Francisco Goya. The works — by artists from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland — depict 325 years of conflicts ranging roughly from the French invasion of Italy in 1494 to the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1814 and their aftermath. Part One focuses on soldiers, their weaponry and their sometimes highly charged interactions with civilians. Part Two will explore brutal scenes of battle, the imagery of diplomacy, and will conclude with hopeful scenes of peace and accord.
