Recalling the moment when machines became gods and workers became machines, Martha Whittington has made and positioned the works in this exhibit to create a precisely constructed environment of obscurely comprehensible machines and devices. Through a series of collaborative performances with dancers from Beacon Dance and music by Jon Ciliberto, viewers can identify the denotation of some kinds of actions or labors: a cart, ladders, tables, buckets and rope that imply function; yet the intense toil that utilizes these objects produces no discernible end result. The objects and devices in the exhibit have been meticulously and manually constructed from rough hewn to finish in a manner similar to traditional factory methods. Whittington in process has paralleled the labor-intensive actions of the dancers/workers within the installation’s environment. The installation celebrates the beauty of fine crafting as well as the rigorous struggle to produce work of this nature.
