Presented by:
Cherokee County Historical Society
Location:
Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center
Today – 6/1/2013
Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Event Description
Because of the large outcropping of marble found in Cherokee and Pickens Counties, the marble industry flourished in North Georgia from the 1880s to the 1930s. The quarry in nearby Tate provided the unfinished product for the dozens of finishing plants in Ball Ground and Canton. This exhibit features photographs, documents and artifacts from the Society’s collection. A special profile about the prominent marble sculptor, James K. Watt, is also on display. The exhibit includes tools, carved marble pieces, sales catalogues and promotional materials from both The Georgia Marble Company and the finishing plants that were located in Canton and Ball Ground.
