Event Description

In his memoir "The Education of a Lifetime," former NFL All-Star and former chancellor of University of Mississippi Robert Khayat tells the story of helping Ole Miss overcome its greatest adversary: tradition. Khayat grew up in Mississippi and experienced firsthand how the state's segregationist policies prevented his SEC championship baseball team from playing in the College World Series. While riots against integrating Ole Miss took place in the early '60s, Khayat was playing football for the newly integrated Washington Redskins. Three decades later in 1996, he became the university's 15th chancellor only to learn that the football coaches couldn't recruit competitively under the shadow of the school's Confederate flag. An independent review by a PR firm revealed that the flag was exceptionally damaging to the institution's national reputation. Khayat's book is the story of what happened when he set out to change things. This event features a reading a book signing by Khayat.
