Deni Bechard, Author
Georgia Center for the Book
Monday at 7:15 p.m.
Author Deni Béchard reads from and signs copies of his latest book, "Empty Hands, Open Arms," at this event. When Deni Béchard first learned of the last living bonobos — matriarchal great apes that are, alongside the chimpanzee, human's closest relatives in the animal kingdom — he was completely astonished. How could the world possibly accept the extinction of this majestic species? In “Empty Hands, Open Arms,” Béchard discovers one relatively small NGO, the Bonobo Conservation Initiative (BCI), which has done more to save bonobos than many larger organizations. Based on the author’s extensive travels in the Congo and Rwanda, the book explores BCI’s success, offering a powerful, truly postcolonial model of conservation.
Please note that this event was originally scheduled to take place at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library
