Event Description

"The Play of Herod" combines the traditional Christmas story of the shepherds and magi traveling to see the miraculous baby with the reaction at Herod's court to news that a potential threat to Herod's power has been born. The play is sung in Latin, with English translations projected above the action, and a consort of viols, recorders, krumm horn, hurdy-gurdy and percussion accompanies the singers. In the Camerata Theatre production, the world of Herod is dreamlike, shadowy and stark, and the Christmas story unfolds in a medieval ceremony of simple gestures and ancient, haunting melodies. The play is one of a group of liturgical dramas found in a Benedictine monastery in France and are among the earliest dramatic works in the Christian era. An additional performance of "The Play of Herod" takes place at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit.
